Anil Sharma, Director of Gadar 2, Draws Parallels with Hollywood's Barbie-Oppenheimer as Sunny Deol's Film Clashes with OMG 2
This Independence weekend, cinephiles and moviegoers are in for a double treat as two highly anticipated films, Gadar 2 and OMG 2, are set to release on the same day, August 11th. Anil Sharma, who is helming the much-awaited sequel Gadar: The Katha Continues after 22 years, addressed the box office clash between the Bollywood biggies. Drawing an interesting analogy with Hollywood movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, both released on July 21, 2023, with massive buzz and fanbase, Anil Sharma noted the similarity in the release strategy of Gadar 2 and OMG 2.
Just like Barbenheimer, the social media-coined portmanteau for Barbie and Oppenheimer, Gadar 2 and OMG 2 will simultaneously hit the screens. Both prequels of these movies were commercial hits, and the buzz around their sequels is dominating entertainment news, with moviegoers eagerly awaiting Sunny Deol's film and Akshay Kumar's starrer. Anil Sharma shared his experience of witnessing a huge crowd queuing up for Barbie and Oppenheimer outside City Mall PVR while he was going for Gadar 2 sound mixing. The diverse audience, including kids, adults, and families, created a festive atmosphere, celebrating the love for cinema.
He tweeted, "It was not the clash of two movies but it was love for movies... it was like a festival mode. Barbie and Oppenheimer people are loving both." He further added, "This is the magic of cinema... especially when two good films come together." Anil Sharma's tweet came as an indirect response to the clash between Gadar 2 and OMG 2, and netizens reacted positively, expressing their belief that both films would receive a similar enthusiastic response.
Gadar 2: The Katha Continues is a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster hit Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The film sees Sunny Deol reprising his role as Tara Singh, alongside Ameesh Patel as Sakina, and Utkarsh Sharma as the young kid, with the story taking a 22-year leap. Anil Sharma, who directed the original Gadar, also helms the second chapter, which is based on the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971.
OMG 2 is the sequel to the 2012 hit film OMG Oh My God, starring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal. Akshay Kumar continues to headline the second chapter, where he will now portray Lord Shiva's role, having previously portrayed Lord Krishna. Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam also join the cast. The film is directed by Amit Rai and produced by Cape Of Good Films and Viacom 18.
As the clash between Gadar 2 and OMG 2 creates excitement among Bollywood enthusiasts, both films are set to offer an enthralling cinematic experience to audiences on their long-awaited release date.
